Final NHATS COVID-19 Sample Person (SP) and Family and Friends (FF) Files Released6/29/2021

Final versions of the NHATS COVID-19 Sample Person (SP) and Family and Friends (FF) files have been released. The SP file is available under Public Use Files and the FF file is available under Sensitive Data Procedures. An updated user guide, variable-instrument crosswalk, and a crosswalk of changes between the beta and final versions are also available.

New Searchable Bibliography Released5/25/2021

A searchable bibliography of publications using NHATS and NSOC is now available at https://www.nhats.org/publications/search. Publications can be searched or filtered by topic, author name, and year, and search results can be exported as a CSV file.

NHATS Round 10 Beta Data Released4/28/2021

The National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) is pleased to announce that a beta version of the Round 10 data files is now available. This beta data release also includes Sample Person (SP) and Other Person (OP) sensitive demographic files from NHATS. Updated documentation, including a revised User Guide, annotated instruments, and a variable-instrument crosswalk have been posted. Round 10 was conducted over the telephone. As a result, physical activities are omitted this round. See the User Guide for more details.
In addition, formatting for spid and opround has been updated on several Stata files from prior NHATS and NSOC rounds (so that they are no longer displayed using scientific notation). For more information, please see the Data Notices and Corrections section of the NHATS and NSOC User Guides.

MedPAR and MAX Files Now Available4/5/2021

Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) files are available for the years 2006-2018. Medicaid Analytic eXtract (MAX) files are available for 2006-2012. New procedures for obtaining the restricted NHATS-CMS linked files have been posted. New NHATS and NSOC Video Tutorial Series 4/5/2021

A new series of video tutorials for NHATS and NSOC users is available at https://www.nhats.org/researcher/nhats/videos. Initial topics include introductions to NHATS and NSOC, survey design and weighting, using the Other Person (OP) file, and annual cognition measures.  Additional tutorials will be released as they are completed.

New NHATS COVID-19 Files Released3/25/2021

The National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) is pleased to announce that new COVID-19 files are now available.


Users may now apply for access to the NHATS COVID-19 Family Members and Friends (FF) Beta file under NHATS’ sensitive data procedures. This file provides new data about the experiences of family members and friends who helped NHATS participants during the COVID-19 outbreak. An updated user guide and variable-instrument crosswalk are also available. The NHATS COVID-19 FF Beta file may be used in conjunction with the early release beta version of the COVID-19 Sample Person (SP) file (available under Public Use Files).


In addition, users may now apply for access (through the NHATS restricted data repository) to a qualitative file with transcribed responses about how COVID-19 has affected NHATS participants’ lives.

Upcoming NHATS and NSOC Workshops1/27/2021

Hands-On Research Workshop on Family Care will feature NHATS/NSOC 

The 2021 Summer Data Immersion program hosted by the Michigan Center for Contextual Factors in Alzheimer’s Disease (MCCFAD) will focus on "Family Care: Racial/Ethnic and Contextual Factors”. During the program, researchers will use data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) and its linked National Study of Caregiving (NSOC).

Interested individuals should complete the application using the following link: SDI Application. Applications with attached CVs/Biosketches should be submitted by February 15, 2021. Please contact mccfad.isr@umich.edu with any questions.

HEADS Center 2021 Virtual Summer Workshop for Early Stage Investigators

The Hopkins’ Economics of Alzheimer’s Disease & Services (HEADS) 2021 Virtual Summer Workshop will convene early-stage scientists who are designing studies related to family and unpaid caregiving to persons with dementia, with a focus on advancing proposals for external funding and analyses for peer-reviewed publication. Researchers will use data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) and/or its linked National Study of Caregiving (NSOC).

NHATS COVID-19 SP Beta File Released12/17/2020

An early release of the NHATS COVID-19 Sample Person (SP) Beta file is now available. This file provides new data about older adults’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic and consequences for care needs and wellbeing.  A user guide, questionnaires, and variable-instrument crosswalk are also available.

NHATS 10th Anniversary Conference: Call for Abstracts11/11/2020

The National Health and Aging Trends Study and the TRENDS network of the Michigan Center on the Demography of Aging are pleased to announce NHATS’ 10th anniversary conference on late-life disability and care. The conference will be held online over two days, on the afternoons of May 26th and 27th. We anticipate 10-12 presentations altogether in 4-5 sessions. We invite abstracts of 1-2 pages, due Dec 15.  Authors will be notified mid-January. For details see: Call for Submissions.

NHATS Round 9 Final Data Released 10/29/2020

Final NHATS Round 9 data files are now available.  Data files are available in both SAS and Stata formats. 

Updated documentation, including a revised User Guide, technical papers on Round 9 weights and income imputation, a revised crosswalk between the instruments and the codebook, and a crosswalk of changes from the beta to final version also are available.

The NHATS data website has been redesigned to be more streamlined. Prior to accessing the data download area, users will need to update their password at https://nhats.org/user/password

Updates include a searchable cross-year metadata resource for researchers from Colectica.

Enhanced NSOC Files Released 8/21/2020

We are pleased to announce the release of enhanced data files from the National Study of Caregiving (NSOC). Data files from NSOC I (2011), II (2015), and III (2017) have been updated with imputed income information and additional derived variables. We also have published a new technical paper describing the income imputation methodology and an updated User Guide. We recommend users download the new data files; updated and new variables are listed in a crosswalk of changes for each data file.

We are pleased to announce that the website for the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) and the National Study of Caregiving (NSOC) has been redesigned. We overhauled the design of the website to be more streamlined and to increase the ease of usability for our researchers. Forthcoming website updates include a searchable bibliography of NHATS and NSOC publications and a new data website.

Accounting for Sample Design in NHATS and NSOC Analyses: FAQs6/22/2020

We are pleased to present a new technical paper that answers frequently asked questions about how to account for the complex sample design of NHATS and NSOC in analyses. Topics covered include conducting cross-sectional analyses with NHATS and NSOC, conducting longitudinal analyses in NHATS, and an overview of weights. Example Stata and SAS code is provided. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this program has been postponed until Summer 2021.

NSOC III Time Diary Final Data Released11/4/2019

We are pleased to announce the release of the National Study of Caregiving (NSOC) Time Diary final data files. In NSOC III, a 24-hour time diary was administered by telephone to caregivers who provided assistance to an older adult in the last month. This data release contains the time diary file as well as a summary file that includes time diary eligibility variables and summary information about the diary day.
